HPE teams up with VMware for new composable platform offering

VMware reveals new partnerships and technology offerings at its VMworld event in the United States

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has partnered up with VMware for what it claims is the industry’s first composable platform for VMware Cloud Foundation, based on HPE Synergy.

The new offering, revealed at the VMworld 2017 event in the United Stated, is aimed at enabling IT organisations to simplify their transformation to a hybrid IT infrastructure, quickly deploy infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and private clouds, and lower virtual machine (VM) costs.

HPE Asia Pacific and Japan vice president and general manager for hybrid IT, Raj Thakur, said that HPE Synergy with VMware Cloud Foundation will deliver a private cloud experience that “empowers IT to be an internal service provider and enables rapid response to business needs with single-click DevOps delivery”.

HPE Synergy with VMware Cloud Foundation effectively extends HPE and VMware existing joint offerings, which include vSphere and vRealize.

The company said that its solutions built in partnership with Vmware are all built on a common architecture and integration with HPE OneView, the vendor’s infrastructure automation software, allowing IT admins to discover, manage and optimise their virtualisation environments.

“HPE Synergy powered by Cloud Foundation will provide a powerful solution to consolidate traditional, private and cloud native workloads onto a single integrated infrastructure platform that is simple to deploy and operate,” said VMware vice president and general manager, Integrated Systems business unit, John Gilmartin.

“Customers will benefit from a highly dynamic, programmable infrastructure foundation that eliminates the operational overhead of traditional deployments thanks to new built-in lifecycle automation capabilities. We are excited about the value that HPE Synergy powered by Cloud Foundation will unlock to our mutual customers,” he said.

VMware Cloud Foundation on HPE Synergy is expected to be certified and available from HPE and channel and distribution partners in late 2017. vSphere and vSAN are certified and already available with HPE Synergy.

Meanwhile, Private Cloud Express with VMware vRealize is targeted for availability in September.

The new offering comes as VMware and Pivotal Software, in collaboration with Google Cloud, unveil the Pivotal Container Service (PKS), a new offering aimed at enabling enterprises and service providers to deliver production-ready Kubernetes on VMware vSphere and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with constant compatibility to Google Container Engine (GKE).

The new offering is expected to become available later this year, and ship as a standalone product able to integrate with Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF) and VMware's software-defined data centre (SDDC) infrastructure.

Meanwhile, VMware also used its VMworld 2017 event to unveil new technology designed to make its VMware Workspace ONE powered by AirWatch the industry's “first” unified end user experience, management and security solution for all endpoint platforms.

End customers will now have the ability to use Workspace ONE as a single solution to enable unified endpoint management (UEM) and unify the end user experience across all endpoint platforms including Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, iOS, and Android, the company said.

In addition, Workspace ONE will now uniquely integrate application programming interfaces (APIs) from major endpoint platform providers to stay in lock-step with the latest innovations in devices and applications.

On 28 August, VMware and DXC Technology revealed the new DXC Managed Cloud Services, enabled by the vendor's next-generation hybrid cloud services platforms.

The new offering, revealed during VMworld 2017, will see DXC Technology become one of the first VMware partners to provide VMware Cloud on AWS offerings, also announced on 28 August, with associated managed services.

At the same time, Fujitsu and VMware also expanded their global cloud relationship, with the Japanese tech giant partnering to deliver VMware cloud solutions as-a-service on the Fujitsu Cloud Service.
