Big Switch Networks, has launched in Australia, bringing to the local market its hyperscale-inspired networking solutions. Big Switch Networks will sell in Australia through global partner, Dell, and local distributor, Newgen Systems.

Newgen Systems CEO, Robert Perin, said this partnership lets local resellers quickly meet Australian business needs to support both network monitoring and datacentre operations.

“Being Big Switch Networks’ Australian distributor means we are bringing innovation and value to the local market with SDN technology.

“Not only are we changing the economics around traditional networking, but we are also modernising the network world,” Perin said.

Together with Newgen Systems, Big Switch Networks has already deployed its solution for the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection and has a number of other customer partnerships in the works.

It has also inked deals with five telcos within the Asia-Pacific region.

The company, which has raised $US94 million in funding to date, also extends its technology partnerships with Palo Alto Networks, Red Hat, VMware, F5, Edgecore Networks, FireEye and ExtraHop into this region to enable Australian customers with a broad range of deployment options.

In addition, the company has appointed Mario Vecchio as its Asia-Pacific managing director, based in Melbourne. Vecchio will be responsible for growing the customer base across the region, harnessing his experience from CABearcom, Progility Technologies, Juniper Networks, Siemens Enterprise Communications and Cisco Systems.

Vecchio said the company has established its presence in Australia as it sees strong interest in next-generation networking technologies in the region. He mentioned that Australia is a growing market of SDN deployments, with the Asia-Pacific region already representing more than 15 per cent of the Big Switch Networks’ customer pipeline.

“Over the past year, we’ve built a robust channel program locally and as part of our continued global expansion, today we welcome Newgen Systems, Palo Alto Networks, Red Hat, VMware, F5, Edgecore Networks, FireEye, ExtraHop and Dell as our strategic partners, to the Big Switch Australia team.”

Big Switch Networks CEO, Douglas Murray, said it has made available two key products – Big Cloud Fabric and SDN-based Big Monitoring Fabric, which provide physical and virtual workload connectivity in datacentre pods and enable security and monitoring of network traffic.

Its two products will serve four use cases. Big Cloud Fabric applies to OpenStack and VMware’s NSX, while Big Monitoring Fabric encompasses pervasive visibility and security and DMZ/ExtraNet security.

Its solutions goes head to head with Cisco’s ACI.

“We see this as an opportunity to grow in the broader ecosystem. Cisco has its version of SDN that it’s trying to evolve but we’ve now become the option for a lot of the other companies in that space,” Murray added.

Big Switch Networks will mainly focus on financial services, government departments, higher education, healthcare, manufacturing, hi-tech and telecommunications industries with these solutions.

“We play in a market that’s about $US25 billion. We needed to take a step back and see how we can ensure that we’re going into specific markets and use cases. We did this because we want the ecosystem of partners that we’re building to be able to solve specific pain points,” he said.

“I expect Australia to be the ‘lighthouse’ for Asia-Pacific and we look forward to build off our ecosystem of partners and build out a team here on the ground as we get more customers."
