EMC and VMware have launched the new VCE VxRail appliance family.
The jointly engineered hyper-converged infrastructure appliance, designed for VMware environments, binds EMC data services and systems management capabilities with VMware’s hyper-converged software including VMware vSphere, vCenter Server and VMware Virtual SAN.
The VxRail appliances link to more than twenty public Clouds including VMware vCloud Air, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure through EMC Cloud tiering.
Additionally, the appliance family comes with integrated EMC mission-critical data services such as replication and backup.
VCE chief technology officer APJ, Matt Oostveen, said the appliance demonstrates VCE’s transition to a platform company from a product company.
“We need to relinquish the engineer's menial duties assembling converged infrastructure and have them focused on business outcomes such as application development and sustaining environments that allow organisations to reach the customer better and expand into new markets,” he added.
“Customers want to be able to take the philosophy of being able to buy versus build and extend that into the Cloud from both an on-premises and hybrid perspective. VCE is starting to add these new offerings because some of our customers ask us what they should do with edge and ask us how we suggest they compute into the remote and regional offices whilst maintaining the VCE enterprise.”
Oostveen added that the engineering was an important part of the VxRail launch as the company is moving into a new market and there are established players like HP, Nutanix and Simplivity.
“We really had to work hard on the engineering and ensure the integration between VMware and VCE was tight. We had to make sure the product was not just software installed on hardware, but that it’s a genuine appliance.”
“What we have is multiplication. We have a small company like VCE where we have staff in the hundreds on the sale side and when you add the 60,000 people from EMC and the bandwidth that that provides us, not just across different sections of the marketplace, but into other countries, it stands to reason that the VxRail will have more exposure.”
