Record fine for games pirate

The operator of two websites selling pirated games console software has reached a record settlement of $190,000 with Sony and Microsoft.

As members of the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia (IEAA), both of the major corporations filed proceedings against Wen Bin Gu, the operator of etpress.com and gamemobo.com.

Gu also had his assets frozen by the Federal Court of Australia and was warned not to reproduce or otherwise infringe on the copyright of games in the future.

CEO of the IEAA, Chris Hanlon, said the settlement was a prime example of the stand the association wanted to take on behalf of the local channel. It estimated that computer game piracy cost the local industry $100 million in lost sales.
