OptiComm has chosen Juniper Networks to replace its entire core network infrastructure in an effort to double its reach across Australia.
The fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and wholesale service provider will use Juniper’s MX480 5G universal routing platforms (MX480) to cater to a “boom” in new property developments.
According to OptiComm, the software-defined networking (SDN)-enabled infrastructure will help them build uncongested networks with cabling for internet, telephone and TV services.
In addition, the partnership will prepare OptiComm for the growth of mobility, internet of things (IoT) and connected vehicles in the future, the company said in a statement.
“Together with expanding our core network infrastructure across Australia and our customers’ ambitious growth plans, we found that our current networking infrastructure needed to be upgraded to facilitate ‘smart cities’ and 1Gbps services,” OptiComm CTO Stephen Davies said.
“What we needed was a partner that could support us in our journey toward doubling OptiComm’s core network, while also providing state-of-the-art speed and security. Juniper Networks has a strong reputation for building simple and reliable networks, so they were a natural fit.”
Opticomm added that it chose Juniper after “an extensive evaluation process”. As well as MX480, Juniper will also supply products such as its MX240 5G universal routing platform, SRX firewalls and EX Series Ethernet switches, among others.

Founded in 2005 in Port Melbourne, OptiComm is an independent carrier specialising in supplying FTTP network solutions to new residential and business units.
In 2009, it was chosen to operate and build the first stage infrastructure for the National Broadband Network (NBN) in Tasmania. However, today it provides non-NBN fibre broadband for telcos such as Exetel, Activ8me, iPrimus and Harbour ISP.
Last year, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission launched court proceedings against Activ8me for allegedly making false and misleading about its Opticomm FTTP packages. The Federal Court later fined the company $250,000.
