Equinix has expanded its International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Perth PE2 in a US$11 million (A$15 million) investment.
The expansion will add 225 cabinets and an estimated colocation space of more than 550 square metres to the facility.
The completion is expected to happen on the first quarter of 2019 when the capacity of PE2 will increase to 700 cabinets and an estimated colocation space of 1,720 square metres.
The expansion was driven by demand from "a broad set of domestic and international customers" for a digital interconnection hub on the West Coast of Australia, including cloud and network service providers, mining, oil and gas industries, and the public sector.
Perth-based customers will benefit from the high-performing PE2 facility that is rolling out Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric (ECX Fabric) this quarter to provide inter-metro connectivity with cloud and network ecosystems across the Asia-Pacific region, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, and more, according to Equinix.
The Australia Singapore Cable (ASC) between Australia and Singapore will terminate in PE2, providing Equinix customers with the ability to interconnect their IT infrastructure.
Following the $1.035 billion acquisition of Metronode, Equinix now has a total footprint of 15 data centres in Australia, including two facilities in Perth, and data centres in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide and Brisbane, strengthening its leadership position in the region.
The total global footprint of Equinix covers 200 IBX data centres across 52 markets, providing data centre and interconnection services for more than 9,800 of the world’s leading businesses. Among them, 40 IBX data centres are located in the Asia-Pacific region

"Having the option of expanding into these new facilities would be a natural extension of our relationship with Equinix.”
In March, Equinix announced a $13.3 million into an expansion of its ME1 International Business Exchange data centre in Melbourne.
The final expansion of the company’s Melbourne data centre will add 375 new cabinets to the facility. At the time of the announcement, the expansion was scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2018, at which point it will have a total capacity of 1,500 cabinets.
