IBM’s cloud business in Australia is clearly getting some love from the local market, with the company opening up its fourth data centre presence in the country.
The company opened its fourth Australian cloud data centre on 28 April, in Western Sydney.
Big Blue partnered up with colocation provider, Digital Realty, for the new deployment, which brings the company’s Australian cloud data centre tally to three in Sydney and one in Melbourne.
According to IBM Australia, the move was prompted by increasing demand in the local market.
The new data centre is based on IBM’s Bluemix infrastructure (SoftLayer) platform, and hosts the Bluemix and Watson offerings as well.
“Our clients can access the full range of cloud infrastructure services, including bare metal servers, virtual servers, storage, security services and networking as well as IBM’s Bluemix catalogue spanning key areas such as cognitive, blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data,” a spokesperson for IBM told ARN.
IBM said that a key part of its cloud strategy is to support growth in new ecosystems and spur innovation.
To do this, Big Blue works to collaborate with companies that understand the local market, like Digital Realty.
This approach enables us to expand our presence in Australia through local expertise as well as our platform and data services, and it gives Australian customers the ability to compete on a global scale. IBM has partnered with Digital Realty on this data centre deployment.
“IBM’s strategy is to focus on building local data centres in country because we know our enterprise clients want to keep their data local -- whether that's for performance, security or flexibility."
The company claims it is the only cloud provider in Australia to deliver a complete set of InfoSec Registered Assessors Program (IRAP)-certified cloud server choices, from bare metal, private and public virtual servers, and object storage, covering infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) for computing, storage and network.
IBM opened its first SoftLayer data centre in Australia in late 2014, followed closely by a second data centre in early 2015.
The new Sydney data centre adds to Big Blue’s 55 Cloud data centres in 19 countries worldwide.
