Fujitsu has become the first datacentre provider to gain a NABERS rating for the energy efficiency of its two Sydney datacentres.
NABERS is a national rating system that measures energy efficiency, water usage, waste management and indoor air quality within the built environment and has recently been extend to datacentres.
The ratings have been incorporated into numerous policy targets, and some assets in the commercial office building sector are required to disclose their NABERS Energy rating under Commonwealth legislation.
Under the system, the Fujitsu facility in Homebush Bay was awarded a 3.5-star rating by the NABERS National Administrator in November 2014.
This was followed closely by Fujitsu’s Western Sydney datacentre with a four-star rating in December 2014.
This makes Fujitsu the only datacentre provider in NSW to have secured a NABERS rating.
The Noble Park, Victoria, datacentre claimed the accolade in 2013 of being the first datacentre in Australia to be certified using the NABERS dat centre tools.
The datacentre at Homebush Bay underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2008.
The energy-saving features now used in the building include a high density, hybrid cooling technology, which uses recycled chilled water and spatial layout planning to minimise thermal currents.

A closed loop cooling system that significantly reduces the amount of water needed to maintain the facility at the industry standard in terms of temperature and humidity.
While a building control management system allows monitoring of the power consumption around the facility in real-time and adjusts settings to maximise efficiency.
The Western Sydney datacentre was commissioned in November 2011 and was built with energy efficiency as a prime consideration.
In addition to the energy saving features from the Homebush facility, the Western Sydney facility also incorporates Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply (DRUPS), indirect free cooling, a heat-reflective roof, storm-water harvesting and the extensive use of recycled materials.

Fujitsu chief executive A/NZ, Mike Foster, said the company was proud to have the first two NABERS rated datacentres in NSW.
"The NABERS rating provides our customers with an independent validation of our application of best practices in energy efficiency of our datacentres, via a comprehensive and trusted assessment," he said.
"Our datacentre team is constantly working on ways to improve our facilities, processes and practices across our national datacentre footprint.”
