McAfee, a division of Intel Security, is giving greater attention to the Internet of Things (IoT) as it looks to capitalise on IDC’s claim that about 212 billion ‘things’ will be connected globally by the end of 2020.

The security software vendor is working with parent, Intel, and sister vendor, Wind River, to provide security solutions which can protect connected devices, systems, applications and data to allow customers to focus on operations.
McAfee said it intends to provide long-term functionality and core security capabilities for the array of current and possible future IoT use cases. Its focus is on addressing challenges regarding expanded requirements for trust, solution integrity, accountability, and privacy.
“Security needs to be built in as the foundation of the IoT,” Intel Security worldwide chief technology officer (CTO), Michael Fey, said. “Any disruption to these IP-connected devices can cause damage to the business and our daily lives.”
“We need to have foresight into what is coming so we can prevent against threats and securely manage these devices.”
Last week, Intel launched its Gateway Solutions for IoT which are based on its Quark SoC X1000 Series and Atom processors, alongside a Galileo-based development platform. The solutions integrate McAfee and Wind River software, promising to interconnect industrial devices into an IoT-ready system.
