Lenovo looks to BMC software, Siemens PLM updates, SonicWall UTM release, and Fluke’s new OTDR

Lenovo looks to BMC for ITIL framework

Personal computer vendor, Lenovo has implemented BMC Software’s Remedy IT Service Management Suite (ITSM) to provide a framework and manage its IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) compliant service deliver.

Lenovo made the move to optimise its own efficiency and enable further process control and systems stability in hope of enhancing customer satisfaction.

The vendor needed to streamline its team’s schedules and monitor its performance with staff spread over more than 1000 locations.

“Since the data from different resources could not be integrated, we faced the challenge of controlling services processes, response times and service quality,” Lenovo emerging markets business group general manager of service operation and support, Lv Zaifeng, said.

Additionally, Lenovo did not have a strategy for managing the handovers needed when Line 2 service personnel passed a job over to Line 3 personnel, either because of scheduling or skills issues.

“BMC Remedy incorporates ITIL best practices, offering incident management, problem management, change and configuration management and improves service levels from every corner.”

“We will continue to work with BMC as a strategic partner, and the next step includes datacentre integration, automation and monitoring,” added Zaifeng.

Siemens PLM updates Syncrofit and QPE software

Product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services vendor, Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of Siemens, has released the 2012 versions of its Syncrofit and Quality Planning Environment (QPE) software.

Syncrofit 2012 is a CAD-integrated, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution for managing the complexities of airframe assemblies, and is used for designing large aerostructures and assemblies.

The software promises to enhance visualisation of fastener data in complex assemblies, improve system performance, and deploy a fastener management solution that works with existing PLM systems and enterprise databases.

It is built to reduce downtime by reducing system update processes, and eliminating the need for manual data entry. The software is integrated into commercial 3D CAD systems, and connects to industry standard Oracle and SQL Server databases.

QPE 2012 enables major aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and supplier to automate the process of identifying engineering characteristics and transferring them to quality plans for first article inspection.

“The aerospace world is in the midst of a major transition to model-based design,” Siemens PLM director of product and market strategy for Syncrofit and QPE, Steve Peck, said.

“These latest product releases incorporate new functionality to help fill the gaps in airframe assembly and first article inspection that just can’t be addressed by CAD or PLM alone.”

SonicWall UTM firewall for small businesses

Network security and data protection vendor, SonicWall has added the TZ 215 unified threat management (UTM) firewall for small businesses, retail, and branch offices to its arsenal.

The dual-core application-aware product offers anti-malware, intrusion prevention, URL filtering and application control capabilities, with mobile platform support for laptops, smartphones, and tablets.

TZ 215 aims to maintain advanced security as well as network performance. It integrates with rich networking functionality, including IPSec and SSL VPN remote access, a seven-port gigabit switch, dual-band 802.11n wireless.

“The TZ 215 provides full deep packet inspection security, alongside the full capacity of the high-speed connections available on the market today,” SonicWall product line manager for network security, Dmitriy Ayrapetov, said.

With drill-down virtualisation, TZ 215 offers application traffic analytics for insight into bandwidth utilisation and security threats.

Additionally, it provides SSL VPN client remote access for Apple iOS and Mac OS, Google Android, Microsoft Windows, and Linux.

It also supports multiple-ISP failover, failover to 3G connections via USB, and hardware failover between two firewalls.

Fluke Networks’ new OTDR

Network test and monitoring solutions vendor, Fluke Networks has announced its OptiFibre Pro optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR), a device designed to reduce costs associated with premise fibre testing.

The OTDR, which uses a smartphone user-interface as to simplify the complexity associated with learning, offers a simplified datacentre mode that automates the process of setting test parameters.

With the ability to test connectors and patch cords as short as 0.5 meters, identifying hidden performance issues hidden in longer cords.

Additionally, it shows all fibre events graphically, and contains built-in project management tool for tracking testing project for multiple users.

Enterprise fibre use is growing at 57 per cent a year, which increases the frequency and importance of fibre testing to minimise issues that can be devastation to network operations,” Fluke Networks program manager, Wayne Allen, said.

“The OptiFiber Pro is aimed squarely at the challenges our enterprise customers are facing today.”
