Specialist Vendor of the Year and Green Vendor of the Year - APC

“What we’re seeing currently in datacentres is demand for power increasing about 20 per cent per annum as companies deploy more and more – whether it is in storage or servers or video,” Makryllos said. “The demand for power is increasing and the cost of power is increasing at the same rate. Through our energy efficient solutions, we can go and offer up to 50 per cent savings from traditional datacentre architecture to modern high density energy efficient architectures. If we can show customers they can save 50 per cent on the energy bill, it is a huge financial incentive as well as a green incentive.”

Perhaps part of the reason APC is so deserving of its green award is that it doesn’t stop there either. The vendor continues to look into other ways to be more environmentally responsible, which led it to look to recycling UPS units – a growing issue in the corporate environment.

“There’s somewhere around 50,000 UPS batteries around in Australia – that’s a huge install base and many of them are very old and have a limited life because of the battery. That’s a lot of potential toxic waste,” Makryllos said.

“The APC TradeUPS program is a major one that stood out in our awards submission. We offer a rebate incentive to trade-in UPS units, which we takeover and have a reverse logistics process, and we ensure the old UPS is recycled in as environmentally friendly way as possible.”

To leap into two award categories – the first ARN Awards it has ever won – is a big achievement for APC, something the vendor is extremely proud of, Makryllos said.

“It’s really great because if you look at the list of judges, it was made up of vendors, distribution partners and channel partners, and to win shows recognition in the industry,” he said.
