Cisco has unveiled plans to acquire network infrastructure analytics company Singularity Networks.

The vendor will be part of Cisco’s service provider business unit and its analytics capabilities will be integrated into the Crosswork Network Automation portfolio.

Singularity Networks captures and analyses network data to help service providers, web companies and enterprises improve network performance, manage costs, gain visibility and reduce downtime through its real-time visibility and analytics tools.

“With network automation software and innovative data collection techniques, we are helping our service provider customers transform how they operate their infrastructure,” said Rob Salvagno, vice president of corporate development and investments at Cisco.

“By effectively extracting and managing huge amounts of data, operators can rapidly address and even proactively avoid disrupting events and impending security threats.

"Singularity Networks technology will help to provide reliable, timely, and actionable information about what’s happening in the network 24/7."

The acquisition will be finalised in the third quarter of Cisco’s fiscal year 2019, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

In December, Cisco revealed plans to optical-semiconductor firm Luxtera for US$660 million and will build its silicon photonics into future enterprise data-centre, web-scale, and service-provider networking gear.

This photonic technology is essential to keep up with projected massive increases in IP traffic volume over the next four years, according to David Goeckeler, executive vice president and general manager, networking and security business at Cisco.
