Power Quality Consultants has helped Vertiv to deploy the latter's SmartCabinet to regional Queensland airport, Longreach.

With 36,000 people going through the airport every year, Longreach was looking for a solution that would save staff time as they have to sweep the server room for bugs every two months and restart systems daily.

SmartCabinet is described by Vertiv as a "self-contained, pre-configured, pre-engineered and factory tested infrastructure solutions for data centres and telecom networks".

“As a small regional airport, the airport team is small in size, but procedures around check-in, security, departure, baggage, and everything else, are the same as in larger airports.

"It is vital technology doesn’t get in the way and instead enables staff and makes them more effective and mobile,” Longreach Airport CEO Kevin Gill said.

Longreach Airport also suffered from high temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius and low below zero which has forced the airport to change key IT infrastructure and restart systems daily.

Outages are another concern as it has the potential to delay flights.

“Our systems are now operating well, even during the summer’s most extreme temperatures,” said Gill.

Longreach Airport is now focusing on internet of things (IoT) as it opens its data to universities and industry to trial initiatives in areas such as video analytics, and then sharing results with the local community.

“Longreach faces a range of typical airport challenges as well as unique ones not encountered by the world’s largest airports,” said Robert Linsdell, managing director at Vertiv A/NZ. “This was well illustrated by a curious emu who kept a close eye throughout the installation."

Based in Queensland, Power Quality Consultants specialises in the design and delivery of solutions with a focus on power protection and the environments supporting electrical and IT Systems.

The company is present in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands and partners with Vertiv, Eaton Powerware, Socomec, APC and ASCO.
