Australian cloud services provider Zettagrid has acquired Perth infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) specialists Silverain Technology for an undisclosed sum.

Similar to Zettagrid, Silverain Technology is also based in Western Australia and was established in 2010, with key customers in the mining, oil and gas industries.

The acquisition forms part of Zettagrid's plans for growth in providing more scale, product breadth and reach, the company stated.

Specifically, Zettagrid has acquired customer contracts, two data centre zones in Perth, networks and equipment but will not be taking any staff from Silverain.

"Silverain is a good fit for Zettagrid and customers of both Zettagrid and Silverain will benefit from this," said Nathan Harman, managing director at Zetta Group, Zettagrid's parent company.

"Silverain provides some private dedicated cloud services that we don't currently offer in Zettagrid which provides an opportunity for us to expand our product catalogue."

Both companies partner with vendors including Veeam and VMware and according to Harman, Zettagrid will consolidate a number of services on the combined VMware platforms. They also utilise similar technologies including Dell.

The company has made a series of strategic investments in the past few years including expanding its data centre and point of presence locations internationally.

The acquisition will allow Zettagrid to provide a "dedicated instance" approach rather than the large scale shared model of implementation it usually provides.

"There are positives for both types of cloud implementations," Zettagrid general manager Nicholas Power wrote in a blog post. "Typically this is cost vs resiliency and flexibility but this acquisition will certainly equip us with some further experience to develop some new offerings around dedicated clouds."

Over time, Zettagrid plans to consolidate the two data centre zones inherited from the acquisition into its primary Perth zone in NextDC.

In 2016, Zettagrid acquired Sydney-based Cloud infrastructure services business Conexim.
