Telstra broadband users hit 300,000 mark

Asserting its commitment to signing up one million broadband subscribers by 2005, Telstra has announced that it has now almost 313,000 broadband subscribers across its cable, ADSL, satellite and wholesale networks.

The figures were revealed during a speech made by Telstra chief of BigPond, Justin Milne, at the Australia-Korea Broadband Summit, on the Queensland Gold Coast.

The summit, that was supported by the Australia-Korea Foundation and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, was organised by broadband consortium m.Net Corporation as a forum for discussing key issues facing broadband development and the IT industry.

Milne said that the sign-up figures were boosted by a record 23,000 broadband orders received through its BigPond retail services during March 2003.

The substantial orders were a result of Telstra’s recent promotion, he said, that gave new customers $100 off the cost of broadband installation for any of its BigPond broadband services, as well as the success of Telstra’s self-install ADSL product.

Milne said about 75 per cent of the Australian population, or around seven million homes, now had access to ADSL services.
