Aussie ecommerce provider aligns with Macquarie Cloud over AWS

Business also unable to scale through previous co-location provider

Australian ecommerce services provider eCorner has selected Macquarie Cloud Services as its public cloud provider over Amazon Web Services (AWS).

"Large-scale ecommerce owes a lot of its success to the cloud," said Jae Debrincat, general manager of eCorner. "We needed to adapt a similar model to be flexible and survive in an increasingly-competitive industry.

"We initially looked to the likes of Amazon Web Services, however the deeper we went, we realised Macquarie was a better fit."

According to Debrincat, the business was unable to scale its offering through its previous co-location provider.

Furthermore, Debrincat added that at any given time, data and resource usage could change dramatically, making it difficult to accurately predict what resources were needed to meet merchant and consumer demand.

The business offers secure hosting services to fintech start-ups and a range of tailored ecommerce solutions across a variety of industries, with the new cloud environment designed to help users manage and simplify areas such as PCI (payment card industry) and DSS (data security standard) compliance.

"With Macquarie, we know where our technical support and data are, a guarantee larger cloud providers couldn’t give – that’s vital, particularly with GDPR and mandatory breach disclosure," Debrincat added.

"Our customers’ primary data is in Sydney CBD, and it backs up to a data centre up the road in Macquarie Park. Local hosting also makes our services faster because there’s no reliance on international pipes."

Based in Sydney, eCorner focuses on ecommerce solutions with a strong presence among small and medium business sectors.

“Smaller businesses often believe the cloud is made for large enterprises and not something they can use to their advantage," added David Tudehope, CEO of Macquarie Telecom Group. "It’s quite the opposite; there might just be a different, local approach to cloud that matches their business goals.

"eCorner has found that mix and can use the cloud to help start-ups and SMEs tap into the fast-growing eCommerce market in Australia."

The agreement comes less than a week after Macquarie Telecom announced an $80 million investment in order to expand its Macquarie Park Intellicentre capacity from 10 megawatts (MW) to 43MW total load.

Existing Intellicentre 2 has 10MW total load capacity, and the first phase of IC3 will involve a new data hall with initial capacity of 16MW, ultimately resulting in a total load capacity of 26MW.

According to Macquarie Telecom, subsequent phases will add a further 17MW capacity.
