ANZ serves up Samsung Pay

ANZ serves up Samsung Pay

Joins Westpac in the Visa debit and credit mobile payment service

ANZ Visa debit and credit card customers will have access to the Samsung Pay contactless mobile payment service.

Samsung Pay is available on compatible Samsung devices, including the Gear S3 smartwatch and the Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones.

ANZ managing director product, Bob Belan said that customers have requested the mobile wallet solution to be available for Samsung devices.

"Samsung has strong device market share in Australia and many of our customers love its open approach to technology, so it made sense for us to work with them in bringing this convenient and secure mobile payments solution to our customers.”

ANZ customers will be able to access Samsung Pay’s features including its three-layered security system.

“We believe the convenience, security and choice that Samsung Pay offers is helping to transform the way Australians undertake everyday tasks when transacting,” said Samsung Electronics Australia vice president, IT and mobile division, Richard Fink.

ANZ joins Westpac who started offering Samsung Pay to its debit and credit customers in April.

Westpac was one of the four banks that requested the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) authorisation to collectively bargain with Apple and potentially boycott Apple Pay.

After months of investigations into the matter, the ACCC denied the request of the local banks, which believed Apple’s exclusive approach to its Apple Pay rollout in Australia would stifle the use of existing contactless payment infrastructure in Australia.

“The addition of Samsung Pay further enhances ANZ's leadership position in payments innovation and in bringing mobile wallet solutions to consumers in the Australian market,” ANZ’s Belan said

“At ANZ, we believe our customers are best placed to make their own choices about which digital wallet works best for them. From today, our customers can now choose to make purchases using their compatible Samsung device and eligible ANZ Visa debit or credit cards.”

Samsung Pay is now paired with more than 40 payment card brands and has more than 100 different types of loyalty cards loaded onto Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay has more than 870 bank partnerships worldwide and there has been more than 240 million transactions processed over the past year and a half.
