Fujitsu’s datacentres go green with full Aussie environmental accreditation

Tech firm achieves accreditation across all six datacentres in Australia.

Fujitsu has achieved the full National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) ratings on all six of its Australian data centres, providing the tech firm with a higher level of energy efficiency.

The Australian arm of the Japanese tech giant said the ratings - which measures building performance on a scale of zero to six stars - were the result of a local initiative to drive the company’s global environmental action plan, an internal initiative to achieve sustainability targets.

Fujitsu achieved an average of 3.75 star average across all six datacentres.

A zero-star rating means the building is performing well below average and has lots of scope for improvement while a six-star rating indicates a market leading performance, with half the greenhouse gas emissions or water use of a five-star building.

The datacentres achieved an efficiency 27 per cent higher than market average, which Fujitsu said equates to an estimated 27 GigaWatt hours of electricity savings per year or 24,000,000 kilograms of carbon emissions.

Fujitsu A/NZ CEO, Mike Foster, said the rating was just as important from an environmental leadership perspective as it is from a transparency one.

“When it comes to energy efficiency claims regarding data centres, transparency is crucial," he said.

"With the exponential increase in data centre energy and Australia being powered predominantly by fossil fuels, the industry needs more accountability for our environmental impacts."

Going forward, Foster said Fujitsu is looking to monetise the ratings by using it as a key pitch to potential customers and partners.

In addition, the company is also offering consultancy services to its channel and customers on achieving NABERS ratings.
