The second stage of the NSW Government’s Silverwater datacentre has been launched.
NSW minister for finance and services, Dominic Perrottet, officially opened the expansion, stating it was completed “on time and within budget.”
“This second stage of the Silverwater data centre paves the way for 130 of the state’s ageing and inefficient datacentres to be consolidated into two purpose-built facilities,” he said.
Perrottet adds the growing facility is proof of the Government’s commitment to “streamline secure, robust service delivery and reduce costs” for NSW taxpayers.
Growing compute capability
The first stage at Silverwater was launched last year in July, and both stages were established by Australian datacentre provider, Metronode, which is part of Nextgen Group Holdings.
A second datacentre in Illawarra’s Unanderra region was completed the following month.
Metronode general manager, Malcolm Roe, said the two datacentres, once fully developed, will be able to support up to nine megawatts of IT load.
“The facilities are ideally located to provide disaster recovery for both the Sydney and Canberra markets, being less than two hours by road and two milliseconds by fibre,” he said.
