Amcom signs University of Melbourne to its Cloud solution

Contract will see it provide UC and collaborative tools

Amcom Telecommunications has signed a contract to provide the University of Melbourne (UoM) with the Amcom Cloud Collaboration (ACC) telephony and unified communications platform.

It follows on from the company’s partnering agreement with Australia’s Academic and Research Network (AARNet) which was signed on May 14. University of Melbourne is part of AARNet.

“In a communications world rapidly moving towards consumption based payment models, the University of Melbourne’s early move to adopt Amcom Cloud Collaboration is a clear indicator of the product’s future potential in the higher education sector,” Amcom CEO, Clive Stein, said.

The ACC platform uses Cisco’s Hosted Collaboration Solution (HCS), which will enable UoM’s 13,000 students to use telephony, video calling, voicemail instant messaging and mobility collaboration on tablets and smartphones.

“The world of education providers is changing and the model for delivering technology, communication and collaboration tools is changing with it. Our strategy is to be experts in the use of the technology, rather than spending all of our efforts managing, maintaining and delivering it at huge expense,” UoM CIO, Sendar Kathir, said.

The contract is Amcom’s largest UC contract to date, and Cisco’s first university to use HCS.

Cisco Australia vice-president Ken Boal said that this deal “represents the largest public sector Cisco HCS deployment in Australia.”

“We applaud the University of Melbourne’s leadership in moving to the next generation of unified communications solutions, to better enable Australian students and researchers to communicate and share ideas, further expanding opportunities to learn and grow,” he said.

Amcom’s ACC will be progressively rolled out across UoM’s 8 campuses over the remainder of 2014. Amcom said it expects to pick up further ACC contracts in the high education sector on the back of the deal.

“Amcom has already deployed 14 ACC solutions nationally to leading enterprises across various industry groups,” Stein said.
