NextDC has received the highest level of certification grading from Uptime Institute for the design of its S2 data centre.

The colocation provider was awarded a Tier IV Certification for Design Documents, which means Uptime Institute considers the data centre’s infrastructure to be able to handle “rigorous uptime requirements and long-term viability” in regards to the engineering and architectural design, according to the institute.

This announcement makes S2 the third NextDC data centre to reach Tier IV for its design, along with the Brisbane-based B2 and the Melbourne-based M2.

Craig Scroggie, CEO at NextDC, called S2 a “ground-breaking development” for the provider and for the Australian data centre industry.

“We have introduced a new dimension of engineering and design innovation into this facility which has raised the bar and is already setting a new benchmark for excellence in the way data centres should be designed and constructed,” Scroggie said.

Simon Cooper, chief operating officer at NextDC added that the ever-changing nature of technology meant the provider needs to change with technological advances, and believes S2 is representative of those changes.

“The evolution of technology and the rate of adoption is growing at an unprecedented pace, therefore it is imperative we continue to stay ahead of the needs of our customers now and the years to come,” Cooper said.

The certification from Uptime Institute is valid for the next two years. To proceed to the next level of certification, Tier Certification of Constructed Facility, the S2 data centre will need to be inspected on-site to verify the installed infrastructure.

The last level of certification, Tier Certification of Operational Sustainability, will require the evaluation of S2’s management and operations.
