In August 2018, TPG and Vodafone confirmed the telcos were in discussions regarding a potential "merger of equals". A review was then launched by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to asses the impact the proposed merger would have on the telecommunications market in Australia.
The ACCC has recently announced its decision to oppose to the proposed merger.
Vodafone and TPG have since filed a legal action in order to proceed with the merger. A statement of claim filed with the Federal Court of Australia stated that Vodafone shareholders have never been paid a dividend and if the acquisition does not go through, "VHA is unlikely to be in a position to pay a dividend" in five years, if ever.
