Spirit Telecom has been awarded a $1.1 million contract by the Victorian State Government to build a "super-fast" network in Morwell.

With more than 13,000 inhabitants, Morwell is set to get access to the same internet services as the metropolitan areas, according to Spirit.

"We will deploy a super-fast internet ring around Morwell using the latest technology via a partnership with the State Government," Spirit CEO Geoff Neate told shareholders.

The network will be built using the ASX-listed telco's IP and will result in multiple towers developed across Morwell. The radio towers will transmit the telco's internet covering a 10km radius from each tower.

Spirit expects that the towers may be able to cover areas outside Morwell including Traralgon and Moe.

Neate also stated that the telco looks forward to strengthening the Morwell community’s access to super-fast internet.

Spirit was unable to provide details of the government agency in charge of this contract.

Back in October 2018, Spirit was awarded a $1.7 million contract deliver high-speed broadband to the Victorian city of Horsham as an alternative to the National Broadband Network (NBN).

As part of that deal, Spirit is in charge of building and maintaining the network, which will use five towers, as part of the local Government's Connecting Regional Communities Program.

At the time, the project was expected to be delivered by the end of 2019, with services available in limited areas in mid-2019.

Spirit Telecom has recently acquired whole licensed telecommunications carrier LinkOne along with its group of companies including Anttel Communications Group, Ignite Broadband and Wells Research for $5.7 million. Later it announced the acquisition of Building Connect for $300,000.
