NEC Australia has expanded its deal with the New South Wales (NSW) Police force to upgrade its microwave radio communications network.

Under the next phase of the deal, NEC will deploy an additional 110 iPasolink radio terminals across the New England region of northern NSW, with the value of the extended deal worth $399,973, taking the overall project value to $1.5 million.

The agreement forms part of NSW Police Force’s Radio Communications Maintenance Program, which sought out a microwave systems supplier for the communications network in 2014.

At the time, NEC deployed more than 180 iPasolink radio terminals across rural NSW, which serves as a critical piece of infrastructure to support NSW Police’s 20,000 staff that work across 500 police stations.

The network provides fully resilient emergency services communications covering an area of 801,600 square kilometres.

"The new iPasolink platform is underpinning our critical radio communications network, essential to the protection of NSW’s seven million people," NSW Police Force commander wireless technology, David Brogden, said.

"Not only is it robust in all conditions but its light weight also helps us reduce operational costs."

Meanwhile, and according to NEC, the iPasolink VR platform can upgrade the radio network’s capacity, effectively future-proofing communications, on demand.

The small size of the devices and low power consumption were also influencing factors when it came to selecting the devices, alongside the ability for skilled NEC engineering teams to provide installation support to the NSW Police Force.

NEC Australia maintains a long term relationship with the NSW Police Force, which it also provides services and support for its mission critical operational communications and information infrastructure including its 000 Support Centre and the Police Assistance Line.
