Data centre operator, Digital Realty, has broken ground on its new ‘SYD11’ data centre development in Western Sydney.
The data centre, colocation and interconnection solutions provider already has two data centres in Sydney, one of which is in Sydney’s Erskine Park. The company's SYD10 facility was opened in late 2012.
That site houses four Digital Realty Turn-Key Flex data centers within 8,010 square metres of capacity, and features 6MW of power.
Once it is fully operational, the new SYD11 data centre will be a 14MW facility, across a total of 16,360 square metres.
The new facility will be connected to the company's existing facility in Erskine Park, providing a “Connected Campus” for Australian and International customers.
"The Digital Realty Connected Campus is an industry-leading solution that brings critical data centre and network elements together under a single, secure environment," the company said in a statement.
Digital Realty has invested serious capital in Australia, which stands as a key market for its business across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region and worldwide.
Currently, the company owns and operates 145 properties across 33 global metropolitan areas. In the APAC region the organisation operates a network of data centres in Singapore, Hong Kong, Osaka, Melbourne and Sydney.
“With two data centres in Sydney and two in Melbourne, we are pleased to be further expanding our footprint in Australia to better serve our growing customer base,” Digital Realty APAC CFO, Krupal Raval, said.
“In addition to demonstrating our commitment to our local customers, we hope this facility will become a hub for the modern economy, providing a significant boost in employment and additional investment in the area,” he said.
Digital Realty, which hosted a ground-breaking ceremony at its Erskine Park site on 8 September to mark the new data centre build, estimates that the development is expected to create over 500 jobs throughout the construction phase and upon completion.
It is anticipated that construction of the new site will take up to 12 months to complete.
