Huawei has appointed Malcolm Shore as cyber security officer in Australia, recruiting the specialist from BAE Systems Applied Intelligence where he served as technical director.

With over 20 years of industry experience, Huawei Australia chairman John Lord said Shore is a “highly credentialed information security professional", with the vendor hoping to tap into his "great deal of expertise and experience to the role".

“Dr Shore is well respected in the information security sector and has a strong understanding of our products and people,” Lord said. “We are delighted to have him lead on cyber security in Australia.”

Prior to BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, Shore held technical director roles for CES Communications, where he led the design and development of commercial landline, satellite, and radio encryption products.

Before that, Shore worked in the Government Communications Security Bureau in New Zealand, taking responsibility for the country’s national information systems security.

In addition, Shore accepted a commission in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) as the assistant director of information systems in defence headquarters after immigrating to New Zealand from London.

Furthermore, Shore has also held two head of security roles in the telecommunications sector, at Telecom New Zealand - now Spark - and the Australian National Broadband Network (NBN) company.

Across these roles he managed all aspects of physical security, information security, and privacy and delivered Sarbanes Oxley and Protective Security Policy Framework compliance.

Shore has also participated in the development of cyber security strategies in New Zealand, Australia, and ASEAN.

Huawei Australia has also recently seen a leadership reshuffle, with the company announcing on 20 March that Meng Xiaojie had joined Huawei Australia as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Meng replaced outgoing CEO Zhao Xichu.
