Optus attempts to lift its game in response to Vocus' nbn power play

Telco commits to network upgrades for fear of losing its competitive edge

Optus Wholesale has secured an exclusive deal to provide wholesale NBN access to Internet Service Provider SpinTel, via its Residential Broadband over NBN (RBBoNBN) product.

The move comes in response to industry rival Vocus Communications buying out Nextgen Networks, with the telco outlining plans to upgrade its network and stay competitive.

As reported by ARN, the $700 million deal instantly made Vocus a major player in the NBN race alongside Telstra, TPG and Optus.

Consequently, this has left Optus concerned that its network is not up to scratch and this puts it in danger of losing the race in the wholesale market.

The Singapore Telecom subsidiary currently provides Layer 2 wholesale aggregation to the 121 permanent NBN points of interconnect (POIs) and access technologies available from nbn, via its Residential Broadband over nbn product.

The telco said it is investing in back-end automation to improve the quality of its service and the access it provides to the nbn.

An Optus spokesperson said the company had been working to improve its wholesale offering to better serve partners looking to resell nbn services.

“As the nbn surpasses more than one million households nationally, partners want access to that market via a single, carrier-grade network without an exhaustive investment outlay,” he said.

Optus claimed it had implemented a suite of improvements to support wholesale delivery of the nbn and offer a better end-user customer experience. <

“We know the importance of a great customer experience and have invested in a range of technology platforms that will improve service connections, and the management of faults."
