A Melbourne-based company has broken the Australian record for a project funded through online crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter.
The headphone designer, nura, received in excess of US$270,000 of pledges in the first three days of its campaign, exceeding its target of $US100,000 - total funding of the project sits at US$874,000, or $1.17 million at the time of writing.
The average Kickstarter campaign attracts approximately 3 per cent of backers from Australia, but almost 20 per cent of nura's backers are Australian, making nura the most successful local campaign on the platform to date.
The company developed proprietary headphone technology that is said to adapt to the wearer’s hearing patterns and adjusts audio delivery accordingly.
The headphones feature a composite in-ear and over-ear design that the company claimed optimises the delivery of low, mid range and high frequencies to the ear.
Nura co-founder and CEO, Kyle Slater, said the company was “blown away” by the reaction to its campaign.
“Through Kickstarter, we aren’t just pre-selling our product and raising funds to enable us to begin mass production, we’re also building relationships and learning from innovative and visionary backers,” he said.
“The Kickstarter funds will be used on tooling for mass production, regulatory certifications, sourcing of materials, and distribution.
