CSIRO’s Data61 has teamed up with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) to lift the digital and cyber literacy of directors and boards across Australia through a cyber-security training program.
The program looks to enable directors and their organisations to deepen an understanding of confidentiality, integrity and availability principles in relation to data and corporate governance.
Data61 chief executive, Adrian Turner, said cyber-security was a significant board-level issue as well as an issue for the nation as a whole.
He stressed that strong advances in ICT have enabled accessibility, efficiency and productivity across all aspects of Australian life and as a result, national security, economic prosperity and social well-being has become dependent on digital transformation.
He said consequently this has created threats and vulnerabilities in the creation, storage and utilisation of information.
“Directors globally have expressed concern at the rapid pace of digital change, increased cyber threats, technical jargon and associated risks as limiting their ability to appropriately fulfil their duties. It is the board’s responsibility to drive innovation and strategy which will flourish with positive leadership, a coherent strategy and proactive information governance.”
AICD managing director and chief executive, John Brogden, said, “Cyber security is one of the most significant and growing issues facing boards today, so it is critical that directors remain up-to-date with this rapidly developing area.”
He added, “Data61’s collaboration with the AICD is an important step in ensuring that directors are fully equipped to deal with any matters their boards are likely to encounter.”
