Yahoo! Japan goes next-generation with firewall deployment

GYAO! taps Fortinet for datacentre security

Yahoo! Japan has deployed the FortiGate-3700D datacentre firewall for its subsidiary, GYAO!.

The company runs of one of Japan’s largest video delivery services and needed an upgrade in network infrastructure to support a growing user base, handle increasing demand for mobile viewing and deliver high-definition content.

The provider said stability and reliability were key considerations as the service was receiving requests in excess one million requests a second and 800 Gbps of traffic.

Yahoo! Japan network security senior manager, Shinji Yoshinaga, said the company wanted a stable and reliable infrastructure for GYAO! that will enable it to process immense access volume without interruption.

Based on the competitive evaluation process, the content provider selected the FortiGate-3700D for the GYAO! video delivery infrastructure. The deployment was completed in Q2 2015.

“More than six months have passed since the FortiGate-3700Ds went into full operation and they have exceeded our expectations. The appliances can handle large volumes of content files and sessions without consuming excess resources, and operation remains stable even under heavy traffic,” Yoshinaga added.

Fortinet A/NZ and South Pacific Islands senior director, Jon McGettigan, said the deployment validated the vendor’s credentials to secure and deliver the most demanding enterprise applications.

“With massive multiple 40 Gbps interfaces, 1 million requests per second and 800 Gbps of traffic, these loads rival any deployment anywhere. And the FortiGate 3700D can handle it all with the ability to scale up as demands expand.”
