CommandHub gets awarded coveted US Patent
Melbourne-based technology company, CommandHub, has been awarded a coveted US patent for its invention of a fully secure vault for Apple’s iPhones and iPads, as well as other smartphone and tablet devices.
This announcement follows several years of development and two Australian innovation patents.
This technology behind the patent, HubVault, addresses critical vulnerabilities that make documents on mobile devices susceptible to a data breach.
In specific, it protects the creation of a unique encryption key for each file within a vault, with those keys further encrypted with a master key that is not stored on the device, nor anywhere else, to provide protection against attacks.
CommandHub first began developing HubVault when one of its customers, an international finance group, sought assurance that its sensitive corporate information remained secure from all vulnerabilities, including the deliberate theft of an iPad by someone who knew the value of the documents it would contain.
CommandHub CEO, Richard Cousins, said when the company looked into this problem, it was surprised to find 13 separate security vulnerabilities.
“Most people seem content to trust their devices’ encryption and remote wipe without realising that it’s easy to obtain the encryption key, because it’s stored on the device, and easier still to circumvent the remote wipe by disabling Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity.
“And when you add the giant shifts in the way we are doing business today - such as BYOD and small, portable computing devices – it really is a fertile field for the bad guys,” he said.
As such, he added that designed to protect the network, protect the data, and protect the process, the HubVault technology addresses all the identified mobile vulnerabilities and has applicability to a wide range of sensitive information requirements, including a number of Internet of Things applications.
