Online payment company, Square, has opened it newest headquarters in Melbourne.
The San Francisco-based company opened its fourth global location in the Victorian capital after Japan, Canada and the US.
The firm, started by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, said the opening follows strong demand from Australian SMBs that adopted the free Square Register point of sale app since its release in November 2014.
The Australian headquarters is led by country manager, Ben Pfisterer. Prior to joining Square, Pfisterer had worked at NAB and VISA heading up innovation and emerging products A/NZ and working across the development of products such as Visa payWave and Mobile Payments.
“We are thrilled to open our local office in Australia, which continues to grow as a country renowned for a strong and diverse entrepreneurial small business community,” Pfisterer said.
“Leveraging our knowledge of the local market, and the growth of Square around the world, we are looking forward to deploying an exciting product roadmap in the future that will help to make commerce easier for Australian small business owners.”
The company said the local team will be focused on supporting Australian SMB owners and entrepreneurs.
Square said it had witnessed a strong appetite from Australian merchants for its point of sale app.
It said Melbourne was chosen due to its thriving small business community of merchants already using its services, as well as having a growing reputation as Australia’s technology hub.
