Telstra launches global service over its low latency 100Gbps link between Sydney and Perth
Telstra and Ericsson have together deployed the latest optical WaveLogic 3 technology from Ciena that aims to achieve unparalleled network performance for latency, reach, resiliency and capacity across Australia.
It’s launched a global service over its low latency 100Gbps link between Sydney and Perth, which Telstra claims is a key access point critical for Trans-Australian and international telecommunications.
“This high-performance link provides Telstra’s customers’ differentiation for applications which require high-speed and low latency, such as financial trading or Cloud based offerings,” Telstra transport and routing engineering director, David Robertson, said.
According to Rricsson IP routing head, Arne Sjule, not having intermediary optical and data regeneration, results in the optimisation of cost and latency performance.
“Un-regenerated transmission of over 10,000 km provides improved resiliency options. Traffic can now be re-routed over extremely long distances when needed, for example in unforeseen natural disaster scenarios,” Sjule said.
In addition, Telstra’s also increased the 100Gbps optical link between Melbourne and Sydney to 200Gbps per wavelength using Ciena’s Wavelogic Extreme technology. Robertson said this will enable Telstra to quickly and efficiently increase capacity to support the growth of customer bandwidth demand, when required.
As a result of these deployments, Telstra and Ericsson have been recognised with the Guinness World Record for having the longest unregenerated optical link. This landmark now runs between Melbourne, Sydney and Perth – a round trip distance of 10,358 km.
