Dell has appointed former Symantec managing director Brenton Smith as vice president and general manager of its Asia Pacific Japan software group.

The appointment comes after Smith quit his post at Symantec after more than two years in the role.

Smith, who has been in new the role for one month, will be responsible for growth and the development of Dell software sales, services support and general operations across Asia-Pacific and Japan.

Formerly, Smith was overseeing the operations of Symantec A/NZ, and was responsible for the profit and loss, sales, presales and service function, representing the company with customer facing activities and industry associations and events, according to LinkedIn.

In October last year, Symantec split into two companies, with one focused on security and the other on information management.

Smith has also previously worked in executive roles CA, SAP and Siebel.

Dell is also on the lookout for a new Australian channel manager after Peter Murphy departed for a UK-based role.

In November, Dell named Ingram Micro as its first Australian distributor for its enterprise products in a fresh focus on the channel.
