Symantec managing director Brenton Smith has parted ways with the security vendor after two-and-a-half years at the helm.

Smith was appointed managing director in May 2012, after a year in Singapore as vice-president for the Symantec.cloud business across Asia-Pacific and Japan.

Prior to Symantec, he had been managing director for CA Technologies in Australia and New Zealand.

A spokesperson for Symantec told ARN Smith decided to leave Symantec to pursue other opportunities.

"Following Brenton’s departure, Paul Simos, has been appointed as the acting head of enterprise sales, Pacific region," she said

"Pacific is a key market for Symantec and we remain committed to our customers and partners in this market."

Smith's Linkedin page now lists his title as "Experienced IT Leader".

Smith was in charge of the total Australian workforce of 650 employees and was directly responsible for about 200 of those employees.

That included all of the company’s sales operations, its dot Cloud business, pre-sales staff and consultants, its finance, human resources and public relations teams among others.

In October last year, Symantec split into two companies, with one focused on security and the other on information management.

The security business, which had $US4.2 billion in revenue during fiscal year 2014, includes consumer and enterprise endpoint security; endpoint management; encryption; mobile; SSL certificates; user authentication; mail, Web and datacentre security; data loss prevention; hosted security; and managed security services.

The company's IM business had $US2.5 billion in revenue in fiscal 2014.

The new company includes backup and recovery; archiving; eDiscovery; storage management; and information availability solutions.
