Thiess signs NBN contract to connect 170,000 premises per year

Contract is for an initial two years with an option for a one year extension

NBN Co and Leighton Holdings' subsidiary, Thiess, have inked a deal to extend and significantly amend a contract to provide installation, activation and maintenance of connection to the NBN.

The new contract expands and varies the existing field services delivery contract which was due to expire in September 2014.

Under the contract, the main scope of work is to connect customers premises to the National Broadband Network in Queensland, NSW and the ACT.

With estimated forecast revenues of up to $183 million, the contract is for an initial two years with an option for a one year extension.

The works covered by the contact include connecting homes and businesses with fibre optic cable from the street, installing NBN connection boxes and power supplies, wiring connection sockets inside homes, providing service activation of end user customers and equipment repairs and service assurance calls to NBN connected homes.

Thiess also incorporates Silcar, a joint venture 50 per cent owned by Thiess Services.

The previous contract, signed in June 2011, was worth $380 million, with a specific value of $285 million to Thiess.

Leighton Holdings executive chairman and chief executive, Marcelino Fernandez Verdes, said the contract recognised the important part of the Leighton Group had in rolling out the national building project.

"Thiess' services business has a range of operation , maintenance, facilities and asset management services, and the strengthening of the relationship with NBN Co illustrates our cutting edge role in telecommunication," he said.

Thiess managing director Bruce Munro said Thiess' services business would now be connecting up to an estimated 170,000 premises per year to the NBN under this field services contact alone.
