Progress builds data analytics platform for construction industry

Progress delivers COINS business intelligence with minimal SQL coding

Construction Industry Solutions (COINS) has partnered business intelligence specialist, Progress, to deliver a data analytics platform without the need for signficant SQL coding.

COINS has implemented Progress DataDirect software to automatically and transparently enable data to be queried, without the need for major SQL coding.

COINS currently stores raw data in a form that is optimised for transaction processing. Progress played a crucial role in connecting that varied construction data with COINS and third party analytics tools to answer the customers’ complex questions.

The semantic layer enabled by the Progress platform makes data available to business intelligence (BI) tools or any other application that a company may want to use.

This enables in-depth, flexible BI at a lower cost and allows the fast, reliable standards-based integration of any data set with whichever BI or reporting tool is preferred.

COINS Australia, general manager, Peter Bates, said, during the companies 30 years working with Progress, it had witnessed many waves of innovation.

"As we are now very much in a customer-centric era, the integration of the BI applications within Progress' platform has come at the perfect time for us, as we're now able to advise customers on the best direction for them to take, based on their data," he said.

"To that point, we're currently working with one of the largest mechanical contractors in Australia, which is reaping the benefits of these Progress-based BI applications with improved knowledge of its own operations."

Progress managing director A/NZ, Peter Fuller, said: “In the highly competitive Australian construction industry, the old adage to ‘measure twice, cut once’ is as true as ever," he said.

"Construction companies cannot afford to make a wrong decision, and measuring the right data throughout the building process is the difference between success and failure.”
