NBN Co and Primus to test telephone migration software

Software aims to ease the copper to fibre fixed-line phone service migration process for NBN customers.

NBN Co and Primus Telecom are joining forces to test out software which would simplify the process of migrating copper analogue telephone services on the fibre-based National Broadband Network (NBN).

Since the NBN was commercially launched, registered telco service providers have been able to offer customers an option to use a UNI-V port which serves up an analogue telephone service or receive a VoIP service through the data port on the network termination device (NTD) installed inside their premises.

Either way, customers should be able to retain their old fixed-line phone number.

“By undertaking these tests we want to ensure it is easy for retail service providers to offer their customers the service they are familiar with using the equipment they already have,” NBN Co COO, Ralph Steffens, said in a statement.

Primus was selected as a test partner after tendering an expression of interest to NBN Co.

“We believe this program will enable us to offer a quality voice product to all NBN Consumer and business fibre customers,” Primus CEO, Tom Mazerski, said in a statement.
