New Products: WD enhances home Cloud and media experience

Introduces apps for the My Book Live and WD TV Live for customisable home entertainment

Western Digital (WD) is expanding the capabilities of its My Book Live network drives with the addition of the WD2go app.

WD My Book Live creates a home cloud environment, allowing remote information and data access through www.WD2go.com, and contains a built-in media server that can be connected to DLNA-certified multimedia devices. The WD2go app (available for both iOS and Android devices) extends its capabilities to enable complete mobility with file storing and access using compatible devices.

The cloud solution aims to provide the security of private content as it is stored with My Book Live at home, while at the same time provides the benefits of remote access via the Internet. Users are able to share files, stream media and use content on-demand as they have the ability to control what is available.

In addition, the premium WD2go Pro app gives users the ability to clip files, photos, songs, video, or folders to transfer files from the My Book Live to the device for permanent access without the need for Internet connectivity. The app also has file-sharing capabilities, enabling the opportunity to privately share content with whoever else is connected.

Other features include: automatic sync and the optional four-digit password restriction to lock mobile access.

The product has no ongoing usage charges, and is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and 7, Mac OS X Leopard, Snow Leopard, or Lion, as well as DLNA/UPnP enabled devices.

The WD2go (free download) and WD2go Pro ($2.99) apps are available from the iTunes Store and Android Market.

WD is also transforming the home entertainment experience with the customisable WD TV Live wireless streaming media player.

With both 802.11n wireless and Ethernet connectivity capabilities, the streaming media player offers a new customisable user interface that can be used to negotiate music, videos, photos, RSS feeds, services (FaceBook, YouTube, and so on), simple games, radio, and the Internet.

It comes with a remote control that can be personalised through the interface, allowing the user to program numbers to follow certain commands when held.

The device, which supports a wide range of formats, allows USB and HDMI connectivity, giving users the ability plug in any drive or computer to access content, which can then be displayed on the home TV in full HD 1080p resolution.

My Book Live is available in: 1TB - $169; 2TB - $269; 3TB - $319.

The WD TV Live retails for $179.
