Gartner: Hosted Virtual Deployments a solid prospect for 2010

India and China might be better prospects in the short-term, but Australia's take-up is set to soar, analyst firm claims

Hosted virtual desktop (HVD) deployments are expected to soar in 2010, according to analyst firm, Gartner.

The economic downturn held some enterprises back as budgets were downsized, but HVD will be a key focus going forward, Gartner principal research analyst, Lillian Tay, said.

The analyst group recently conducted a survey of enterprises across China, India and Australia.

“HVD came up as one of the top two priorities through the survey, along with software-as-a-service,” Tay said. “Once the economy recovers, there should be more rollouts – 2010 will be a good year for HVD.”

Verticals most expected to take-up the technology include financial services, energy, transport and wholesale. Although Gartner hasn’t projected the dollars behind it, it expects there will be 49 million units implemented by 2013 hosted on a virtual network.

Australia differs from the rest of the South-East Asian region when it comes to HVD uptake, the report stated.

China and India, who were also surveyed, listed HVD deployments as a low priority, although enterprises within those nations provide strong opportunities for HVD providers. In those countries, 41 and 25 per cent of large enterprises, respectively, claimed budgets were being set aside for HVD deployment.

Australia, as a mature market with limited budgets, was seeing a number of HVD deployments put on hold or cancelled due to budgetary restrictions, making it, potentially, a more challenging region at present for HVD providers, Tay said.
