HDS, QLogic extend storage pact

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has announced a new global relationship with QLogic which will allow HDS to resell the storage vendor’s 2GB SANblade host bus adapters (HBA).

Under the new arrangement, HDS will resell and support QLogic HBAs in multiple storage networking solutions and operating environments, including Novell, Windows, Solaris and Linux.

QLogic, which products include SAN controller chips, HBAs, network switches and storage network management software, already provides application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) controllers for Hitachi hard disk drives, as well as switches used in HDS’s SAN environment solutions.

The 2GB SANblade HBAs feature up to 80,000 input/output operations per second, as well as native support for Solaris, Windows NT and 2000, Windows Server 2003, Novell NetWare, Red Hat and SuSE Linux.

HDS channel director for Australia and New Zealand Greig Guy said that although the latest deal between the two companies is essentially a "component" deal, it reinforces the vendor’s commitment to providing collaborative solutions “that can satisfy any requirement from customers”.

In particular, utilising the 2GB SANblade HBAs from QLogic with a HDS SAN solution would address those customers working in a Novell operating environment, Guy said.

“We do have relationships with competing vendors, but these tend to cover different operating environments: we have Emulex for the Windows space and JNI targets Unix,” he said.

“The market needs that card [QLogic HBA] in Novell operating environments predominantly.”

All of HDS’s channel partners will be able to source the new HBAs from HDS, he said.

Guy said HDS conducted qualification testing on QLogic’s HBAs over a period of three months. These consisted of vigorous load tests, as well as interoperability testing with other third party products supported by HDS, he said.
